The theory of arithmetical functions has always been one of the more active parts of the theory of numbers. The large number of papers in the bibliography, most of which were written in the last forty years, attests to its popularity. Most textbooks on the theory of numbers contain some information on arithmetical functions, usually results which are classical. My purpose is to carry the reader beyond the point at which the textbooks abandon the subject. In each chapter there are some results which can be described as contemporary, and in some chapters this is true of almost all the material. This is an introduction to the subject, not a treatise. It should not be expected that it covers every topic in the theory of arithmetical functions. The bibliography is a list of papers related to the topics that are covered, and it is at least a good approximation to a complete list within the limits I have set for myself. In the case of some of the topics omitted from or slighted in the book, I cite expository papers on those topics.
On November 13, 2015, Antoine Leiriss wife, Hélène Muyal-Leiris, was killed, along with 88 other people at the Bataclan Theater in Paris, when three men armed with guns and suicide bombs opened fire on the unsuspecting crowd at a rock concert. Three days later, Leiris, a young journalist, wrote an open letter addressed directly to his wifes killers, which he published on Facebook. The whole world was in mourning for the victims of the attacks in Paris, but Leiris refused to be cowed or to let his 17-month-old sons Library and Information Science Research in the 21st Century : A Guide for Practicing Librarians and Students free download pdf life be defined by Hélènes murder. He refused to let the killers have their way. For as long as he lives, this little boy will insult you with his happiness and freedom, he wrote of his son. Instantly, that short Facebook post caught fire. It was shared over two hundred thousand times and was reported on by newspapers and television stations all over the world. In his beautiful and heartbreaking defiance of the terrorists who had killed his wife, Leiris became an international hero to everyone searching desperately for a way to deal with the horror of the Paris attacks.
